Part of “Old Info And News”

March 24, 1998

Character: Jane

How you might know her: It’s a loving reunion since Mitchell played Dinah Lee Mayberry Alden McKenzie on the soap, alongside co-star Michael Weatherly. Currently she can be seen as the title character’s girlfriend in HBO’s movie Gia, and in 1996 did the short-lived Fox series L.A. Firefighers.

What you need to know: Jane is a lawyer used to date Campbell until he broke up with her. After seeing Campbell’s brother Ben for only six months, Jane wants to marry him within 36 hours, even after Campbell begs her to reconsider and go back to him. When their Hawaiian honeymoon is cut short by a typhoon, everyone (including Jane) speculates that it wasn’t the weather that brought them back to shore.

Defining quotes: “Jane just got scared that she wouldn’t have everything in her life by the time she turned 26,” says Campbell.

Their characters/themselves: “Jane is a planner,” says Mitchell. “She plans every minute of her day – probably even when to smile. I’m probably a little bit like that. It’s an annoying quality, but I have it in spades. I had a plan for my life. It’s amazing how it doesn’t ever happen.”

Hennessy, Mitchell and Moffett fill in the blanks

MGM has rounded out the cast for “Molly,” inking deals with Jill Hennessy, Elizabeth Mitchell and D.W. Moffett to join Elisabeth Shue and Aaron Eckhart in the film.
“Molly,” which is expected to undergo a name change, is directed by John Duigan from a script by Dick Christie. Bill MacDonald is producing and Amy Heckerling is exec producing.

Thomas Jane also joined the cast earlier this month.
Shue stars in the film as the title character, a mentally handicapped woman who becomes a genius after undergoing a revolutionary medical procedure.
Eckhart will play Molly’s brother, who cares for her after she is released from an institution. Hennessy, who is best known for her three-year stint on NBC’s drama series “Law and Order,” co-stars as the doctor who performs the surgery on Molly, and later falls in love with Buck.

Moffett — whose feature credits include Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Stealing Beauty,” “Black Widow” and “Pacific Heights” — plays Buck’s best friend, an attorney. And Mitchell takes on the role of a psychiatrist who convinces Buck to let his sister undergo the operation. Mitchell recently appeared in the HBO telepic “Gia” and currently co-stars in Fox’s new drama series “Significant Others.”

The film goes before the cameras Sunday in Los Angeles, for a possible release in late 1998 or early 1999.

TV Guide Interview About Significant Others

Part of “Old Info And News”

March 7, 1998

The last time Elizabeth Mitchell watched herself on television, she had to keep jumping up to block the set from her father’s view. Not that she was ashamed of her work in January’s gritty HBO movie Gia, but it included several nude love scenes with actress Angelina Jolie. Happily, the 27-year-old can sit still for her new role, that of a “very organized, very funny” newlywed on the Fox comedy-drama Significant Others (premiere March 11, 9 PM/ET).

“It’s kind of thirtysomething about twentysomethings.” Mitchell says of the new series, which is from the producers of Party of Fie. “I’m married to my former boyfriend’s brother. There’s some tension between them” – a vast understatement. While the actress admits she does have sex scene in Others, “so far it’s just me in my underwear.” Laughing, she adds, “And even though everyone saw my breasts in Gia, I make them clear the set anyway.”

GIA | Fort Worth Star-Telegram Interview

Part of “Old Info And News”

EMFC_GIA_Elizabeth_Mitchell_M_00440.jpg“I don’t see why love scenes between two women should bother anyone,” says Jolie, who is married to Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting). “Sexuality shouldn’t be limited, either. I enjoyed doing the love scenes. Hopefully Elizabeth did, too. ”

She did, sort of. “It was work,” Mitchell admits. “I guess some people will find the scenes shocking. But we were all pretty comfortable with how things were on the set. I think it was executed quite tastefully. It’s a great film because of the way it’s told,” Mitchell continues. “Gia didn’t hold anything back. My character sort of fell under her spell, at least until she became a liability. But even after she pulled out of a relationship, she still cared for her. I guess Gia had that kind of effect on people. Come to think of it, so does Angie. “

Gia | Variety Review

Part of “Old Info And News”

EMFC_GIA_Elizabeth_Mitchell_M_00440.jpgUncompromisingly bleak, the artistically ambitious “Gia” is a “Boogie Nights” for the 1980s. The cautionary biopic, a mesmerizing tour de force for lead Angelina Jolie, achieves its goal of illustrating that a supermodel need not have an eating disorder to become wholly self-destructive. A needle in the arm proves just as effective as a finger down the throat.
