Lost 3×09 “Stranger In A Strange Land” | AV Club Review

///We noticed that someone at AV Club was rewatching Lost and posted some reviews about the show. We’re going to post here all the parts about Juliet and Elizabeth.///

EMFC_LOST_3x09_04035.jpg“Stranger In A Strange Land” (originally aired 02/21/2007)

I realize we can’t entirely strip an episode of context: this hour had to follow the time-bending “Flashes Before Your Eyes” and doesn’t even feature Desmond or Charlie, and is technically a direct follow-up to the tremendous “Not In Portland” and almost completely sidelines its best character in Juliet. It’s as if the writers were on the road to getting the season started, but then realized they left the stove on back on the other island, requiring them to make up a reason to go back. Jack remains important to this story, but the episode works too hard to design a plot around him being left behind when a subtler set of scenes would have sufficed.

While departing from the Hydra offers promise for the Others’ future, the episode itself offers nothing tangible, making sure its small gains—a stronger bond between Jack and Juliet, who are now in it together—are shrouded by nonsense to no particular end.

In retrospect, though, some of this works better than it would have at the time. Now that I know Juliet better, her struggles here resonate more, even if the episode doesn’t do much but turn her into a damsel in distress (particularly in those shots of the meeting we don’t understand, as she peeks out the door in terror).

Honest question: does Juliet’s brand ever come up at any point after this? Was it just there as a thematic link to Jack’s tattoos? It just ends up feeling so random and disconnected from anything else we learn about the Others.

Lost 3×07 “Not In Portland” | AV Club Review

///We noticed that someone at AV Club was rewatching Lost and posted some reviews about the show. We’re going to post here all the parts about Juliet and Elizabeth.///

EMFC_LOST_3x07_000000004410.jpgThis is actually a review of “Flashes Before Your Eyes” but the author reflects on Juliet’s flashbacks in “Not In Portland”.

Lost was consistently vague about whether we could understand its flashbacks as memories the characters are distinctly reflecting on in the context of the episode itself. In “Not In Portland,” for example, we could surmise that Juliet would logically be reflecting on the steps that brought her to the island after Ben gives her the opportunity to return home, and would have likely been thinking about those fateful events throughout this tying process. However, the show rarely makes clear a one-to-one relationship between the transitioning scenes in and out of the flashbacks and the flashbacks themselves, meaning the flashbacks function less as explicit recollections and more as a selective sequence of events that have value to character in the way they are valued—either directly or indirectly—by characters.

Comic Con 2009 – Photos

We found some SDCC 2009 photos in a better quality and a couple of never before seen pic from the same con. WOW, we can’t believe it’s been 9 years. We remember how overwhelming it was that period. Liz had a new gig (V) and we were still waiting for answers about Juliet’s fate. It was crazy and beautiful at the same time. Her appearance at the SDCC that year was something we really need!

Lost 3×07 “Not In Portland” | AV Club Review

///We noticed that someone at AV Club was rewatching Lost and posted some reviews about the show. We’re going to post here all the parts about Juliet and Elizabeth.///

EMFC_LOST_3x07_000000002604.jpg“Not In Portland” (originally aired 02/07/2007)

The third season opened on Juliet, in a scene we first presumed was a flashback introducing her character, but was revealed to be a different perspective on the plane crash that started it all. It set up the third season as the season where we’d finally learn who the Others were, and how exactly they fit within the island’s ecosystem.

“Not in Portland” opens on Juliet, in a scene we first presume—both through Juliet’s initial appearance on a beach, and through Ethan’s appearance in a hallway—to be on the island, but is subsequently revealed to be her first proper flashback. On the one hand, it continues the season’s resistance to returning to the settlement it started with, obscuring that particular piece of the Others’ history. However, on the other hand, it signals the show committing to the tentative fleshing out of the Others as real characters that began in the first six episodes, but which the show held from the audience in favor of mystery and obfuscation.

Lost 3×06 “I Do” | AV Club Review

///We noticed that someone at AV Club was rewatching Lost and posted some reviews about the show. We’re going to post here all the parts about Juliet and Elizabeth.///

EMFC_LOST_3x06_000000000350.jpgWe meet Juliet, but we don’t know anything about her, that early tease in the premiere the most we’ll get in terms of answers regarding the Others and their goal.

The Others have no plans to actually kill any of the people involved, with Danny’s desire for blood a deviation from Ben and Juliet’s plan—the threat of violence is their strongest weapon, creating the circumstances that would lead the trio to take action in ways that serve their larger goals (in this case, Ben’s surgery).

Lost 3×05 “The Cost Of Living” | AV Club Review

EMFC_LOST_3x05_01904.jpg///We noticed that someone at AV Club was rewatching Lost and posted some reviews about the show. We’re going to post here all the parts about Juliet and Elizabeth.///

this week Jack spends more time with Ben and Juliet, learning more information and taking one step closer to performing the surgery. Now, to be clear, it’s an effective bridge: when Juliet wheels the TV over to Jack’s window and plays her tape channeling Bob Dylan, it’s another memorable scene that shows the way the Others’ flair for the theatrical enlivens the show’s storytelling. You can see what attracted the show to expanding the role they play in the story, and you specifically get a stronger sense of Juliet’s agency in the situation at hand.
