ABC has climbed into the belly of “The Beast,” ordering six episodes of the drama series about an edgy cable news service.
“The Beast,” which comes from Imagine Television and Touchstone Television, will go into production immediately and could be ready for air by April. ABC may also decide to hold the show for fall as strike-contingent programming.

Imagine re-shot the series pilot earlier this fall, this time with Mimi Leder directing; Frank Langella was the only holdover from the original cast, which also featured Courtney B. Vance.

Skein stars Langella as media mogul Jackson Burns, whose news channel not only covers events but turns the cameras on the reporters behind the scenes. Jason Gedrick, Peter Riegert, Elizabeth Mitchell, Wendy Crewson, Naveen Andrews, April Grace, Harriet Sanson Harris and Michael Riley Burke also star.

“The Beast” is exec produced by Imagine’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Tony Krantz, as well as Leder, Ian Sander, Kim Moses and Kario Salem.

Look for blonde beauty Elizabeth Mitchell to report to the ER. Mitchell has committed to appear in a four-episode arc this season on the hit medical drama as a shrink who gets romantically involved with the authoritarian Dr. Kerry Weaver (played by Laura Innes). Mitchell most recently donned scrubs for her portrayal of a nurse on a soap opera in the Neil LaBute film Nurse Betty. While Innes’s character has dated men in seasons past, Mitchell is experienced at Sapphic action — she played Angelina Jolie’s lover in the HBO original film Gia.

Mitchell’s episodes are scheduled to start production later this month, and will probably air for February sweeps.

Elizabeth Mitchell recalls smooching Jolie

EMFC_GIA_Elizabeth_Mitchell_M_00440.jpgElizabeth Mitchell, currently cozying up to Dennis Quaid in the film Frequency, tells the Toronto Sun that she still has fond memories of kissing Angelina Jolie when the two costarred in Gia. “She’s got such beautiful lips, and they’re all her own,” says Mitchell. “She’s all real. She’s a work of nature. She hasn’t put herself together at the plastic surgeon’s office.” The actress also notes that her big love scene with Jolie prompted a great deal of hilarity on the set. “We did this one love scene on the bed where we were laughing so hard, we were shaking—the whole bed was shaking,” Mitchell recalls. “The director was yelling, ‘Stop it, stop it!’ Angelina and I tried to think of sad things so we wouldn’t laugh, but everything we thought of became absurd and funny, so it got worse and worse and worse.”
