Will Lost’s Sawyer and Juliet Reunite? Revolution’s Jon Favreau and Elizabeth Mitchell Drop Scoop
Make. It. Happen.
While talking about tonight’s season finale of NBC’s Revolution with the always-luminous Elizabeth Mitchell, a certain fellow Lost alum’s name popped up as a potential future guest star: Josh Holloway.
“I’m a fan and I’m excited to see [him return to TV!],” Mitchell told us of her former Lost love interest, who will star in CBS’ new thriller Intelligence. “I would be excited to see him read the phone book. He’s Josh Holloway!”

This is amazing! I just can’t with her. One of the things I like about Liz is that she is a fan too, just like us. AWWW!
Even as Revolution wraps its first season tonight (NBC, 10 p.m. ET), Elizabeth Mitchell still can’t believe the reception to the show. “Stephen King loves Revolution. Who the heck does that happen to?” she says. “He came as a guest into the editing room, and I couldn’t believe it. I’m a huge fan of his. I’m always amazed at the people who watch what I’m doing.” She hopes he, like other viewers, will enjoy the season finale’s payoff. “I think it’s enormously gratifying,” she says. She starts to say more, then stops herself. We’ll let her off the spoiler hook this time because she was willing to reveal what TV show she thinks should be remade (it involves an island!), who she wrote a fan letter to when she was young, and what her most prized and geekiest pop culture possessions are in our latest EW Pop Culture Personality Test. This is an interview from TCA (January 2013) but they’ve just released that.
Elizabeth Mitchell fights the militia and Monroe
On NBC’s REVOLUTION, renewed for a second year and now coming to the end of its first season Monday nights at 10, electrical power has been gone from the world for fifteen years. In the series created by Eric Kripke, this means things are tough all over, but Elizabeth Mitchell’s character Rachel Matheson has had an especially hard time. Her family has believed her to be dead for over a decade, she’s just spent four years as a prisoner of would-be world conqueror Monroe (David Lyons), her son Danny (Graham Rogers) has been killed and she’s having a rocky relationship with daughter Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos).
In contrast, actress Mitchell – Juliet Burke on LOST, more recently human freedom fighter Erica Evans on V and Santa Claus’ spouse in THE SANTA CLAUSE 2 and 3 – says she’s having a blast enacting Rachel’s travails. At an event set up by ABC for the Television Critics Association, Mitchell, born in Los Angeles and raised in Texas, talks about playing an embattled woman in an era of crisis.
AX: Is there anything you do differently when you’re playing somebody who’s in a slightly altered world than somebody who’s in the reality that we’re living in now?
ELIZABETH MITCHELL: I try to always just be aware of what’s going on. I’m such a reactive actor – I just react to what’s around me. It’s an easy job for me if I have great people. I just listen and react. That’s pretty much my thing. So yeah, this world, it creates a completely different [environment] – you’re more protective of yourself, you’re more guarded.

This is from an interview with Damon Lindelof where he talks about Juliet & Sawyer. <3
When the show wasn’t taking risks, that’s when it wasn’t any fun to write. The problem with taking risks is they’re risks, so you don’t always come up aces. We did this episode called “La Fleur” in the fifth season. The big risk that we took in that episode was, not only that we were going to jump ahead three years in time with all the castaways on the island — who basically got indoctrinated into Dharma — but the big risk was that Sawyer and Juliet were going to be a couple, and you weren’t even going to see it develop. You saw one glimmer of them having a scene together, and in the next one they’re full-on in a relationship. We were just going to fast-forward to it all. When we saw the first cut of that show, we were like, “This is literally going to … it doesn’t work at all. This is going to fail.” But we already shot three episodes beyond this, we were committed. Elizabeth Mitchell and Josh Holloway both told us, “We’re not sure if we can sell this.” Our gut told us that Sawyer and Juliet was going to work if we just give it time and believe in it. It was like Tinkerbell: Just clap your hands, and it’s going to work. Somehow, through the editorial process, we willed that episode into working. But before it aired, we had already started coming up with a plan, as writers, to cut Sawyer and Juliet. We were fairly sure that we had done enough damage control for the episode not to be terrible — but the audience was going to reject that relationship. When they saw the episode, they loved it.

As Kurt and Blaine battle it out with the Doctor and Rose in EW’s Greatest TV Couple of All Time championship, we’re unveiling our favorite couples, who didn’t advance as far as we would have liked. Here’s the case for Sawyer and Juliet of Lost.
I didn’t know I wanted Sawyer and Juliet to be in love until they already were. That’s the thing about Lost: it’s time-trickery cuts out everything except mystery and revelation, which makes a nameless Island fill with dread and a man like Josh Holloway’s James “Sawyer” Ford into the soul mate of a woman like Elizabeth Mitchell’s Juliet Burke (even if they couldn’t make it past round two in our bracket game).
