Lost 3×18 “D.O.C.” | AV Club Review

///We noticed that someone at AV Club was rewatching Lost and posted some reviews about the show. We’re going to post here all the parts about Juliet and Elizabeth.///

This is the last review they posted. They didn’t write anything else for the other seasons.

[…]it’s easy to imagine “D.O.C.” as a potential Juliet episode given her central role, but it’s Sun’s perspective that is most crucial, and therefore frames the events accordingly.

Of course, now it’s a different kind of ticking time bomb. “D.O.C.” gives us our most concrete information yet about Juliet’s pregnancy research—nine women have died in her care, the Staff station existed as a hospice of sorts during their final days, and no woman has reached their third trimester. We also get confirmation of the island’s impact on sperm count, offering scientific—albeit magically-enhanced—evidence to support Jin’s claim to the baby. And yet the Juliet side of the story struggles a bit on rewatch, as her actions are very consciously framed as suspicious. Why did she need to put her hand over Sun’s mouth and kidnap her in the middle of the night? Why did she need to be so opaque as to where they were going? Why did the Staff station still have to be so murdery with the flickering lights? All of it is there to make us think that Juliet is leading Sun into a trap, which you know is wrong if you’ve already seen the show and remember what happens from this point on. The episode itself even works against this, with Juliet’s “I hate you” after finishing her tape-recorded message to Ben reinforcing that she still resents him and is still closer to a hero and a villain. But it’s tough to put yourself back in the moment with the Juliet character’s uncertainty as compared to another step in Sun’s emotional journey.

Well it’s easy to answer to those questions.  Obviously it was done that way because the viewers needed to be suspicious about Juliet, but that it doesn’t mean it didn’t have also a diegetic meaning: Juliet basically needed to kidnap Sun in the middle of the night because of course she had to leave a report for Ben and didn’t want anybody else around to do that.

Review: “Elizabeth Mitchell Has Shone This Season”

Part of “Old Info And News”

emmy-awardQuestion: I know it’s a little early for Emmy talk, but I was so horrified by Lost’s snub last year that I can’t stop thinking about it. What do you think Lost’s chances are at this year’s Emmys? I think Elizabeth Mitchell, Henry Ian Cusick and Michael Emerson all have a good chance, as well as the show in the drama category. Also, I heard last year’s snub was due to the producers’ submitting episodes poorer in quality, such as “Man of Science, Man of Faith,” to the nomination panel. I hope the Emmy voters correct last year’s grievous wrongdoing and nominate Lost this year. What do you think?— John

Matt Roush: I think I admire your faith in the show and in Emmy voters. Frankly, I’d be shocked if the Emmys reverse course to show much if any love toward a show whose reputation took several hits this year: in the ratings and in media coverage over that ill-conceived opening “pod” of episodes. I agree that Elizabeth Mitchell in particular has shone this season, but given the richness and variety of TV drama these days, I can’t help but think Lost’s breakthrough freshman season (when it won best drama) is going to be its sole trip to the big party. I’d love to be wrong, but I think (speaking in island terms) that ship may have sailed for good.

Lost 3×18 Reviews

Part of “Old Info And News”

season 3 photoshoot puple tshirt elizabeth mitchell (3).jpgBack on the island, I was so proud of Sun for getting all in Juliet’s grill. The woman deserves some answers! Excellent acting by both actresses, of course. I never once could tell whether Juliet really did care about Sun’s health, or if she was faking the whole thing in her magnificently three-faced way. I mean, it was obvious she was going to be reporting some sort of stats to Ben, but I still bought that she was really upset to see those women die and didn’t want to give Sun the same sentence. And when she said “I hate you” into the tape recorder, it seemed to indicate that she’s still just working for him because he’s either promised her the next boat out or promised to hurt her sister if she doesn’t

Sun’s a Smarty: I know it looks like Juliet is playing Sun, but there was something in Sun’s “thank you” that made me think Sun’s not buying Juliet’s BS. Is there any reason Sun couldn’t double-back to the medical hatch and do some prying of her own? Take Kate and a gun and have a field day tearin’ the place apart!

What Lies Ahead: Ben’s getting a flashback very soon, and it’s filled with so many jaw-dropping reveals, you might want to forewarn your downstairs neighbors there’ll be a few thuds on their ceiling. Also, Juliet just might be good after all. Why? She hates Ben! She told us last night—and something tells me that someday soon, she’ll get to tell him, too.
