Elizabeth Mitchell’s phenomenal performance as Juliet Burke

This is a really great review about Elizabeth’s performance on LOST:

Best known for her role as the enigmatic Juliet Burke on ABC’s “Lost,” Elizabeth Mitchell spent four years on that show, providing her ambiguously defined character with enough strength, tenderness and intrigue around which a showrunner could have built an entire series. While ostensibly a supporting character, Juliet could easily have taken the lead actress reins from the petulant and occasionally one-note Kate (We get it: she’s a fugitive with a heart of gold. Did we really need to see an entire flashback episode of her robbing a bank for a sentimental toy airplane to know that she’s not the cold-blooded criminal she appears to be?). On the other hand, Ms. Mitchell’s phenomenal performance in the season three episode “One of Us” has to be one of the most emotional hours of television in the past five years, largely due to the marked contrast between flashbacks of Juliet’s hesitant submissiveness and her steely resolve in the present timeline. The final scene in which Ms. Mitchell’s expressions seamlessly transition from surprise to joy to regret while watching a video feed of her long-lost sister still has the power to make any cynic a little misty-eyed.

Review | How ‘Lost’ Will Find the Emmys Again

Part of “Old Info And News”

emmy-awardTwo years ago, Lost won the Emmy award for Outstanding Drama Series. Last year, it was snubbed in all the major categories, the lone holdout being Henry Ian Cusick’s Guest Actor nomination for playing Desmond. This year, with even newer rules changes in the nomination process, Lost’s Emmy chances are much improved and it could make a big comeback for the way it returned to its early levels of greatness. […]

On the ladies’ side, Elizabeth Mitchell is winning rave reviews for the complicated Juliet, and her second flashback episode, “One of Us,” features one of her best performances.

Review: The Others shift the tone on `Lost’s’ island

Part of “Old Info And News”

emmy-awardNot coincidentally, this newfound clarity has coalesced during a season in which Michael Emerson and Elizabeth Mitchell have made “Lost” deeper, better, richer. Emerson, who joined the show last season, is Ben, a bug-eyed Machiavellian leader with an elfin face and shades of L. Ron Hubbard’s cult power. Mitchell, who made her debut this year, is his reluctant double-agent, a willowy beauty who’s infiltrated the main castaways’ beach for the somewhat-stated purpose of stealing their fertile women for the somewhat-stated purpose of populating the island so that L. Ron Ben can continue his important “work.”
Their pas de deux, a mixture of deceit and empathic gesturing, is the engine driving the show’s current season.
Did the writers already have big plans for Emerson, or did they see the way he stole a scene from Matthew Fox and Terry O’Quinn last year simply by eating Cheerios?
Mitchell was the star of the best episode this season, during which we learned how she got to the island, drinking a sedative and climbing into a submarine, surfacing some hours later on an island paradise.

TV Guide Interview: Elizabeth Mitchell Teases a “Twisty, Turny” Lost

Part of “Old Info And News”

April 9-15, 2007

Elizabeth Mitchell Teases a “Twisty, Turny” Lost
Elizabeth Mitchell previews Juliet’s new, revealing Lost (Wednesdays at 10 pm/ET) flashback, reflects on her life as a mom, and tells tales from riding shotgun with Angelina Jolie.

TV Guide: Your character, Juliet, the fertility doc recruited by the Others, gets flashback action in this week’s episode. What can you tell us about the episode?
Elizabeth Mitchell:
It’s a nice, revelatory flashback. My first flashback episode wasn’t particularly twisty or turny. This one is definitely twisty and turny.

TV Guide: You’re not just teasing us? We’ll actually get some big answers?
Oh, yeah. So many things we’ve already seen about Juliet and wondered, “Why did she do this? Why is she so cold?” You’ll know exactly why.

TV Guide: Can you tell us more?
We are going to see Juliet much worse for the wear. Anyone who really wanted to mess her up and grind her face in the mud, they’re going to get what they want. And the stuff between me and Ben [Michael Emerson] is pretty heartbreaking.
