Lost 3×07 “Not In Portland” | AV Club Review

///We noticed that someone at AV Club was rewatching Lost and posted some reviews about the show. We’re going to post here all the parts about Juliet and Elizabeth.///

EMFC_LOST_3x07_000000004410.jpgThis is actually a review of “Flashes Before Your Eyes” but the author reflects on Juliet’s flashbacks in “Not In Portland”.

Lost was consistently vague about whether we could understand its flashbacks as memories the characters are distinctly reflecting on in the context of the episode itself. In “Not In Portland,” for example, we could surmise that Juliet would logically be reflecting on the steps that brought her to the island after Ben gives her the opportunity to return home, and would have likely been thinking about those fateful events throughout this tying process. However, the show rarely makes clear a one-to-one relationship between the transitioning scenes in and out of the flashbacks and the flashbacks themselves, meaning the flashbacks function less as explicit recollections and more as a selective sequence of events that have value to character in the way they are valued—either directly or indirectly—by characters.

Lost 3×07 “Not In Portland” | AV Club Review

EMFC_LOST_3x07_000000002604.jpg“Not In Portland” (originally aired 02/07/2007)

The third season opened on Juliet, in a scene we first presumed was a flashback introducing her character, but was revealed to be a different perspective on the plane crash that started it all. It set up the third season as the season where we’d finally learn who the Others were, and how exactly they fit within the island’s ecosystem.

“Not in Portland” opens on Juliet, in a scene we first presume—both through Juliet’s initial appearance on a beach, and through Ethan’s appearance in a hallway—to be on the island, but is subsequently revealed to be her first proper flashback. On the one hand, it continues the season’s resistance to returning to the settlement it started with, obscuring that particular piece of the Others’ history. However, on the other hand, it signals the show committing to the tentative fleshing out of the Others as real characters that began in the first six episodes, but which the show held from the audience in favor of mystery and obfuscation.

Ranking Lost | Review

78. “The Other Woman” (Season 4)

Juliet as the titular other woman doesn’t do much to move the needle in terms of overall Island mythos, but the episode gives Elizabeth Mitchell yet another opportunity to show us why she is one of the cast’s best actors. While Locke, Sawyer and Hurley camp out in New Otherton, we flashback to Juliet’s long days as an Other.

Best Lost Episodes of all the Time | Review

The Best Lost Episodes Ever

As the island drama powers down, we picked our favorite hours — what are yours?

“Not in Portland” (Season 3, Episode 7)

Juliet is a crafty Other, to be sure, but this episode tells us the story of how she ended up on the island, after a career in fertility research with her ex-husband (guest star Zeljko Ivanek) in Miami. It’s a sympathetic portrait, as we learn that she is as much a victim of Ben’s deceptions as anyone else. (Richard Alpert told her that she was applying for a job at a facility in Portland, Ore., hence the title of the episode.) On the island, Juliet’s loyalty to Ben is tested when she assists Jack in removing Ben’s spinal tumor. It’s revealed that Ben has agreed to let Juliet leave the island, after three years, if he survives the surgery.

“LaFleur”Photobucket(Season 5, Episode 8 )

There have been plenty of episodes that demonstrate why Sawyer is such a shifty opportunist, and also why he needs to atone for his past actions. But it’s “LaFleur” that shows the con man assuming one more pseudonym to become a good man when he assumes a prominent position of power within the 1970s-era Dharma Initiative. It’s also in this episode that we learn that James and Juliet have, in the absence of the Oceanic 6, made a love connection as pure and as beautiful as those hand-picked flowers he brings her. Just as things couldn’t appear more perfect, the members of the Oceanic 6 arrive on Ajira Flight 316, ready to wreck homes.
