Longtime fans of the alien-invasion drama V knew not all Visitors are bad even before ABC’s revamp of the NBC hit. In the original miniseries, some of the Visitors even banded together to form a rogue anti-V group called the Fifth Column. In Tuesday’s episode of the new V, Ryan (Morris Chestnut) attempts to unite the anti-V Visitors once again.
Chestnut sat down with TVGuide.com to discuss the Fifth Columnists, other double agents, and Ryan’s upcoming efforts to save the Earth. He also revealed that despite the promos showing the return of Dale (Alan Tudyk), there may be something slightly off about him when he comes back…
TVGuide.com: Were you a fan of the original miniseries?
Morris Chestnut: I was aware of it back in the day, but I wasn’t a fan until I got the part and I had to go back and watch some of the miniseries to see what the show was about. I vaguely remembered, but I wasn’t an avid fan back then.
TVGuide.com: Do you compare your character to any of the characters in the original miniseries?
Chestnut: People say it’s the Robert Englund character, [Willie], but I just try to do something a little bit different because it is a reimagining and not a remake, to where we’re playing the same exact characters. I try to bring my own feel and my own twist to it.
TVGuide.com: When will we see the Fifth Column and will Ryan be a part of it?
Chestnut: For those who don’t know, it’s like an army of traitor aliens on Earth to fight against the actual Vs. The Fifth Column got together before and things happened so bad before, people don’t want to get back into the fight. Ryan is trying to get people together for the Fifth Column and hopefully they will be back together.
TVGuide.com: There’s been a lot of talk about the last time there was a fight. Will we see any of that?
Chestnut: You’re going to see some things that happened. I know the writers want to inform the audience exactly what happened. It’s important for my character, so people can understand why I changed sides. Yes, I think you will see it and why I don’t want to eat people.
TVGuide.com: Will he team up with Erica (Elizabeth Mitchell) at all?
Chestnut: There’s a chance that he will team up with Erica.
TVGuide.com: What’s the relationship like between Georgie (David Richmond-Peck) and Ryan and their battle against the Vs?
Chestnut: The hard part about that is the fact that Georgie has very bad feelings toward the Vs. Although I’m a traitor, I’m still a V, so it brings up some conflict in our relationship.
TVGuide.com: Will Ryan find difficulties leading this double life?
Chestnut: Yes, he’s going to find difficulties. In Tuesday night’s episode, Ryan is in danger. I go to try to recruit somebody. Ryan is trying to put the Fifth Column back together and I’ll just say this: Not everybody is happy about Ryan putting the Fifth Column back together.
TVGuide.com: Is his wife, Valerie (Lourdes Benedicto), in danger?
Chestnut: One of the things with the Ryan-Valerie relationship — because a lot of people are asking why he doesn’t just tell her — the more information she has, the more danger she is in. The Visitors won’t know how much information she knows. If they feel that she knows any information about them, then she’s in more danger than if she doesn’t know.
TVGuide.com: In the miniseries, we saw some scary results when humans and Vs had babies. Ryan and Val have been shacking up for a while now, so might they have a little lizard-human?
Chestnut: It’s set up to go a different way. If it came from Val and myself, it would be obvious. Remember there’s also something going on between Tyler [Logan Huffman] and Lisa [Laura Vandervoort]. Is it going to come? I don’t know, but they’re trying to set it up.
TVGuide.com: Will the Visitors find Ryan?
Chestnut: Ryan is a pretty slick cat. He has the ability to get in and out of situations. I can say that they will be in hot pursuit of Ryan very shortly. I’m all right for right now. You never know what’s going to happen. Things get a little physical Tuesday night.
TVGuide.com: Would he ever switch sides and go back to working with the Visitors?
Chestnut: It doesn’t happen like that. You’re going to see in the next couple of episodes what they’re capable of. Once you change, there’s no going back. Although, one of the old Vs that I’ve dealt with in the past has gone back and dealt with them, but they’re only using him for the moment and then something may happen to him.
TVGuide.com: Is there a possibility of agents working from the inside, as far as traitors or Fifth Columnists actually working on the mothership?
Chestnut: The one thing about Vs is that you never know where they are. In the last episode, Erica told Father Jack [Joel Gretsch], don’t trust anybody. So you can’t trust anybody.
TVGuide.com: In the miniseries, the Vs used a form of mind control on the humans. Is that going to come into play?
Chestnut: If you watch Tuesday night’s episode…Let me say this about the final two episodes before we go on break: Those episodes will answer a lot of questions and it’s going to set some things up, especially for enthusiasts of the old miniseries. You’re going to have a lot of questions answered and then you’re also going to have some other questions. That particular question…there is a possibility for some type of things like that. We’re science fiction, there’s a world of possibilities.
TVGuide.com: Is there anything that can stop the Vs, like a weapon?
Chestnut: Well you saw in the pilot that Erica stabbed Alan Tudyk’s character right through the heart…
TVGuide.com: Yeah, but he’s alive in Tuesday’s episode.
Chestnut: Well, is he alive? The thing about it is, yes, Ryan is alive right now, but this is just skin. They could easily take Ryan’s skin off and put it on another V if that V is dead. There’s a strong possibility that it could not be Dale.
TVGuide.com: There’s a big cliffhanger in episode four. Should we worry about anyone dying?
Chestnut: The thing about ABC is that, it’s like Lost, they can kill people off just like that. There’s a very strong possibility that somebody can be killed off just like that. I’ll say that episode four is great.
Do you think the new ABC show stacks up to the original miniseries?
If something happens to Erica I’ll think there is a cospiracy against us! LOL!
